Philosophy & history of the Rastbichlhofs
The history of the Rastbichlhof dates back a long way. A farm has stood here for more than 600 years. For about a century, the Steuxner family has also found their home at this location. "It all began when my great-grandfather Alois Steuxner first leased the farm in the 1920s and finally bought it in 1928," recounts his great-grandson Andreas Steuxner, who runs the hotel together with his sister Barbara today. "Back then the farm was an agricultural enterprise with about ten hectares of meadows and forests. The extensive farming was a time-consuming task that demanded a lot physically and was associated with much diligence and modesty." Since then, the business has been passed down from generation to generation and developed step by step. Accommodation in the form of private rooms was first rented out to summer visitors in the post-war period, who came from the flourishing German and Austrian cities to relax in the mountains.
1969 was a significant year – also for the Steuxner family. 1969 was an important year - also for the Steuxner family. "With the handover of the farm in 1969, my father Alois took over the fortunes of the Rastbichlhof and began modernization work in the same year," Andreas reports on his father's commitment: "You could almost say that no stone was left unturned." Many things were modernized, from running water and central heating to the core renovation. At Christmas, there was a clear view of the sky - from the first floor to the roof truss, as the winter break from farming was put to good use. Alois and Elisabeth married in 1970 and their children Georg, Andreas, Barbara and Christine were born in the following years. The Rastbichlhof became more and more full of life. In 1973, Elisabeth and Alois finally opened the "new" Rastbichlhof with its first restaurant: the "Gasthof Rastbichlhof" now grew close to the hearts of many guests. Through numerous renovations and extensions, the Rastbichlhof quickly developed into a modern 3-star hotel. After a complete renovation of the main building and the continuous expansion of the wellness area, the host family was finally rewarded with the fourth star in 2004. But that was not all; family suites and modern rooms, a steam bath, the renovation of the kitchen and the construction of a new relaxation room followed.
In 2020, following the death of his wife Elisabeth, Alois Steuxner decided to pass on the hotel to the next generation. Since 2021 the siblings Andreas and Barbara have been overseeing the operations of the Rastbichlhof. This decision brought Andreas back to his homeland in 2021 after 25 years of studying and working in the USA and Germany. Filled with enthusiasm and drive, they embarked on further developmental steps for the hotel. Among other things, the decision was made in 2023 to make the Rastbichlhof a certified organic hotel. "Further developing our business into a certified BIO HOTELS® establishment is the right move for us," the hotelier explains. "We want to infuse our love for nature even more into our hotel in the future. Our path is leading the Rastbichlhof a bit back to its roots. Agriculture and closeness to nature have always been a part of Rastbichlhof."
The historically rich Rastbichlhof has been passed down from generation to generation and has always been shaped by its owners, who are deeply connected to their homeland, through diligence, love, innovation and a willingness to embrace the new. Today the fourth generation is already leading the hotel and in true homage to their ancestors, is ready to take the next steps and venture into new territories. Since 2023 the establishment has been transitioning to an organic hotel, thereby setting the course for the future.
With the Rastbichlhof the hosts have created a special, harmonious retreat for nature lovers and those conscious of organic living. In a cozy atmosphere, traditional Tyrolean lounges, modern rooms and a comfortable wellness area, guests can experience the hospitality and values of the Steuxner family and their team: genuine hospitality, a familial ambiance, respect for tradition, a deep connection to their homeland and the courage to innovate. Stay curious and prepare to be surprised!
